Chiratta Puttu

Puttu is one of the healthiest breakfast in the world. This steamed rice cake is an authentic Kerala dish, prepared by steaming a mixture of rice powder and coconut in a cylindrical steamer. Chiratta puttu is a variety of puttu prepared in a coconut shell. After grating the coconut, a hole is made in the center of the shell and used for steaming. Nowadays steel/ aluminium chiratta puttu maker is easily available in the market, that can be used with a pressure cooker and I am using one of them. I will try to include the pictures of an original chiratta puttu ASAP. Puttu can be served with kadala curry, cherupayar, egg curry, steamed bananas etc.

Preparation time- 15 mins
No of Puttu- 1 no

Ingredients

Rice powder- 3/4 cups
Water- 1/4 cup or as required
Salt- 1/2 tsp or to taste
Coconut- 3 tbsp grated

Method

These are the only ingredients required. Ready to make 'puttu powders' are available in the market. For preparing puttu powder at home use the PS given below. Try to use freshly grated coconut for perfect taste.

Mix rice powder and salt in a large bowl. Sprinkle water occasionally to this mixture and continue mixing until the entire flour is properly wet and the mixture looks something like bread crumbles.

Fill the bottom of puttu maker with a tbsp of grated coconut, add rice flour mixture on top of it, till the brim and top it with 2 more tbsps of grated coconut. More the coconut, better the taste. :D

Take a cup of water in a pressure cooker, close the lid, once steam starts coming from the nozzle mount the puttu maker on top of it. Wait for 5 to 7 mins for steam to appear from puttu. Thats it..... Your healthy breakfast is ready. Please don't judge my pressure cooker from his appearance , he does his job perfectly all the time :D

Serve it hot with Kadala curry or egg curry.

PS:-
  • I used a standard 240 ml measuring cup.
  • To make a perfect puttu you can use coarsely grinded rice powder.
  • To prepare rice powder for puttu, soak rice for atleast 2 hrs and coarsely grind it in a dry grinder
  • If you have a steamer with small holes available, you can prepare puttu at your home ( provided you are not too particular about the shape of puttu)
